We’re close to the break point for what would be volume one
of our next book. When chapter eight is finished and we do a thorough re-write,
we could publish it. We’re debating this. There is a huge amount of work left,
almost all of it for volume two. We could put out volume one, but we’re afraid
that alone it will not hold our reader’s interest.
It might. There is good stuff in it, new, well-researched
and interesting at least to me. But it ends with Russell and Barbour’s
separation and he controversies that followed it. We don’t expect to sell many
copies anyway, but we worry that interest will wane between the publication of
a volume one and the final volume.
I’m in no shape physically or mentally to make a rational
decision. (I’m very sick right now.) And Bruce seems torn by a desire to get it
out and wanting to tell the whole story at once. So we’re opening it up for
discussion here.
Lack of interest here, and we my shelve the project.

There exists no "Whole story".
Also after your enddate of the volume, somewhere in the 1890's I believe, the story goes on.
And always new sources will be published on teh Internet, expanding your story.
But what you have is the "Best possible story now" and worth publishing, both in one or two volumes
First time I have seen your blog. Fascinating information. IMHO it would be very unfortunate for so much work to not be finished or at least made available even in unfinished form. My compliments and best wishes on your endeavors.
I would wager that since this is a very specialized work, that anyone interested in Volume 1 will also be interested in any follow ups. I will definitely purchase any volumes that become available.
As a vote of confidence, I just bought the Nelson Barbour ebook. Looking forward to Volumes 1 and 2!
You write, 'we worry that interest will wane between the publication of a volume one and the final volume' as though this is a reason not to publish a first volume. If your material is interesting, one would have thought demand for Volume Two would have been whetted - rather than waning.
Perhaps publishing a first volume would remove a huge burden from your shoulders, instill a sense of achievement and provide a spur to continue?

I would go for publishing in two volumes. It saves us readers having to wait years for a volume that would then be so large it would cost the earth to publish, let alone ship to interested parties. And each succeeding volume could contain a brief update on what further research has revealed about what is already published. For example, the few extra details about Nelson Barbour that have surfaced could be included in a brief section of the volume you are currently working on.
In practice it would be more than two volumes. Originally, the present project was only going to be volume one of a series, so the amount of material should dictate how the pie is sliced. A commercial project would edit you down mercilessly, but this needs to be as complete and definitive as you can make it.

Jerome makes some very good points about publishing Volume one first. And that would mean that we wouldn't have to wait so long to start reading. I have read everything I could find online about Pastor Russell and I would be thrilled to read your extensive research. It is logical that you are concerned about the customer demand, but if you can put this on Amazon, you will get good exposure there.
