After marrying a couple the marriage license that had to be given before, in this case, CT Russell, could marry them, had to be returned to the marriage licese office. In one case Russell forgot, went on a preaching trip, and his secretary Edward W Brenneisen hurried to the license office to apologise and hand the license over. It may have soct Russell a penalty of 25 to 50 dollars. It was the marriage of Allen Herbert Anderson and Anna Elizabeth Feldner. See Brooklyn Daily Eagle of October 5, 1911 for more info about this, and the different ways states handled apparently with returning the license or not.

Now if only such documentation were to exist for the marriage of Joseph Lytel and Emma!
