We think ...

After talking it out with Mr. Schulz, we think the lawyer mentioned in a previous post was Adam C. Bowman of West Virginia, a lawyer in coal country and a Watch Tower adherent in the correct period. There is no firm proof. It's only a surmise. We would like to locate his photo.

I had a search for Adam C Bowman on Ancestry, but the only person of that name for West Virginia is in a couple of census returns. In 1880, he is a dry goods merchant. There is no index link for 1890, but he turns up again in the 1900 census for West Virginia, still a merchant, but his son Stewart is a lawyer. Where did you get the name from? A newspaper or genealogical website? Ancestry has lots of gaps of course.

He is named as Captain A.C. Bowman in Zion's Watch Tower and says he is a lawyer. That leads us to Adam C. Bowman, Confederate captain.

Arthur J. Valentine trained as a lawyer in "the law office, in 1886, of A. C. Bowman, of Barbour County."

(II) A. Jay, son of Andrew and Rachel (Digman) Valentine, was born in Barbour county, March 8, 1866. He attended the public schools, after which he taught school for several years and then read law in the office of Captain A. C. Bowman, at Valley Furnace, Barbour county, West Virginia. -- http://genealogytrails.com/wva/tucker/bios.htm
