E. C. Gruss

Some of you have read his Apostles of Denial, in our opinion a really disreputable book. But I'm more interested in  your observations than in my own. Comments?

I read it back in the 1970s when the Witnesses first came to my door. Believe it or not, the Witness who was calling on me, when finding out I was reading the book, encouraged me to continue reading it. He said the more information you have, the better. Gruss did seem to have an ax to grind, but I liked the fact that he was acting in harmony with his beliefs. He really felt strongly that Witnesses were misled, and felt he needed to do something about it. I like reading material written by people who have strong opinions.

In one of the appendices, her talks about his personal testimony. I wish it has been more thorough, and I wish it had been more toward the beginning of the book. As I read the first few chapters, I kept wondering if he had been a Witness, and I think that uncertainty colored the way I perceived his arguments.

As to his skills as a researcher, I am not qualified to make an accurate judgment. I still have my copy, and I occasionally read it.
