This Blog

I have a significantly declining readership. Any suggestions?

My two cents:

Tell us where you are on the revision of the Barbour book.

Tell us what you have collected for Volume 3 of Separate Identity, and what you could use help looking for.

We are getting to an era where even amateurs like me may be able to provide help in locating something.

As an example, I am currently tracking down a trip by Russell to the Central Wisconsin area, not far from where I live. A couple that Russell may have stayed with has a great-granddaughter that I will be interviewing in a few days. I am searching a newspaper archive for any corroboration of this visit.

I think many of us are curious at what stage your research currently is.

I would agree with Andrew. Everything has been geared to the publication of volume 2, but now that has happened there might be a slight anti-climax. But you have revisions for the Barbour book and also material already written for volume 3 (possibly originally intended for volume 2 but then shifted forward as that project grew). Publish draft chapters or extracts. With the internet there are people out there who can try and find more. And the blog remains a resource. People dip in and out and sometimes are led to it by searches for things that interest them, and not all stay around. That type of readership will always fluctuate.

Bruce, this is a great blog! Maybe also time of the year has an impact: we now have sunny summer time, many readers may spend more time outside and visit this blog not as often as in winter time. But I always appreciate what I read, thank you for your excellent work!

Andrew,

I am from South Central Wisconsin. Which trip are you investigating? The Madison trip?

Whether or not Madison was included on this trip, I don't know.

The trip supposedly included Central Wisconsin, travelling along a train route whose tracks no longer exist. That story goes that Bible Students in an area near Wisconsin Rapids hosted Russell overnight at their home during his trip. I do not know the year, or even if the trip took place. I will know more in a week or so, and will share my findings here.

Do you happen to know how many trips Russell made to Wisconsin, and in which years? Then I could use newspaper archives to search for more evidence.

Thanks,

Andrew

I'll check the Convention Reports, St. Paul Enterprise, and Watchtower to see what I can find. Wisconsin holds a special place in my heart.

If you have access to the 1913 convention report, check for the Madison Wisconsin convention. The date was June 29 -- July 6, 1913. This was during the 1913 transcontinental trip. They would have traveled from St. Paul Minnesota to the Madison area.

There is more but this is the first one, I'll try to take time to search later on.

Dear Richard,

I do not seem to have an email from you. However, copying from this blog is disabled and will remain disabled. Blame that on a Polish troll who stole content to post it on a discussion board dedicated to inept, misdirected and poorly done 'research.' My only recourse is to block the ability to cut and paste.

Andrew,

I did a search for you and found a few visits that I listed for you below (and one with a questionable date). My email address is this name at Gmail if you should want the PDFs of the report or St. Paul Enterprise's.

Madison, WI May 31, 1908. See The Greensburg Morning Press, June 3, 1908 (Sermon title, The Blood That Speaketh Better Things.)

June 29-July 16, 1913. There was an 8 day convention in Madison Wisconsin while on the 1913 Transcontinental Tour. The 1913 Convention report also has some photos from this convention. Sermon Title, "The Ten Lepers."

Appleton, WI, July 14 (1916 or 1906 - The Harvest Gleanings Volume 2 reference suggests that the St. Paul Enteprise printed a sermon of Russell's entitled, "The True Vine and the Vine of the Earth" on July 14, 1906, but the paper didn't start until about 1910-1911. So I'm guessing 1916 or 1910?. The St. Paul Enterprise reprinted this sermon on October 16, 1917.)

Milwaukee Wisconsin, September 24, 1916 (Sermon Title, Rising of the Sun of Righteousness. See St. Paul Enterprise, September 26, 1916. This was also published in the National Labor Tribune of September 28, 1916)

UNKNOWN DATE --
"Many interesting experiences have been related about the problems these brothers encountered. It is reported that once Brother Russell and his party were riding through Wisconsin when the railroad trainmen forgot to disengage their special car at a nonscheduled stop, so their train whizzed right through the town where the public meeting was to be held. It didn't stop until an hour later when the train reached Milwaukee. The brothers, of course, were all excited because they had missed their stop, so they immediately urged the railroad authorities to hitch a special engine on their special coach and take it back to the place Brother Russell was assigned to speak . They arrived just in time to hold the public meeting." Jehovah's Witnesses in the Divine Purpose, Pages 50-51.
