I see that claim in a few pieces of controversialist literature, but they offer no evidence to substantiate it. Illness doesn't always keep people from smoking, but Rutherford did have a serious lung condition for much of his life after contracting pneumonia in prison.
I tend to agree with Noah. One would think that with all the photos of Rutherford floating around, if he smoked cigars there suely would be one. If it can't be shown, the evidence is rather lacking. And if he did, what's the issue. Smoking was frowned upon in some quarters but not a disfellowshipping offense back then. No photo, no evidence.
