It is a pleasure for me to try to transcribe a text written in the same script (the so-called Sütterlinschrift) as the one used by my maternal grandmother, except that she used to trace much better formed characters. So here is the result of my attempt :

France, December 26th, [19]15 My dearly beloved Gertrude, I want to express my heartfelt thanks, my dear child, for the dear card received. So far I am doing well and I hope so for you, my dear child. Today is now Boxing Day [or the day after Christmas], and we are so separated, that we don’t know anything about what we should start for a long while. How nice it would just be if there was peace, and we could today take a walk alone in God’s free nature. I have not received the one cassette with the cigars, I hope it still arrives. Today I also received a card from my brother Raul [?], he never writes to me again. I hope you’re happy with the letters I write to you, my dear child, as I just can’t write such beautiful letters as my brother. I hope there will be soon peace. As for today I will remain with my affectionate greetings and kisses your only ?? and ever faithful Max Greetings to your parents and your brothers and sisters.
Just an idea of mine, I´m not so sure about Sütterlin which was introduced in Prussia only in 1915. Might it rather be Deutsche Kurrentschrift?, asks German Girl
Bruce, Yes please, but only if the 'Max' is a Bible Student. Although your comment that 'it is for a non-Watch Tower research project' suggests otherwise.
To the attention of German Girl, thank you so much, you are totally right, it couldn't be the Sütterlin script as my grandmother was born about 1890, I am mixing them up often. Stéphane

And here comes my tentative translation :
France, December 26th, [19]15
My dearly beloved Gertrude,

Greetings to your parents and your brothers and sisters.

Sorry, instead of Raul, it is more likely “ my brother Paul ” with a poorly drawn P letter.
Just an idea of mine, I´m not so sure about Sütterlin which was introduced in Prussia only in 1915. Might it rather be Deutsche Kurrentschrift?, asks
German Girl
Do we have a surname please for Max or have I missed it somehow?
Gary,
This is for a non-Watch Tower research project. Do you still need the first name?
Bruce,
Yes please, but only if the 'Max' is a Bible Student. Although your comment that 'it is for a non-Watch Tower research project' suggests otherwise.

Gary,
At this point, I do not think he was. I'm still working my way through his letters, but I think not. His last name is Winkler.
