It is a pleasure for me to try to transcribe a text written in the same script (the so-called Sütterlinschrift) as the one used by my maternal grandmother, except that she used to trace much better formed characters. So here is the result of my attempt :
Frankreich, den 26.12.15
Meine innigst geliebte Gertrud !
Sage Dir mein Kind
meinen herzl. Dank für erh. liebes <- herzlichen <- erhaltenes
Kärtchen. Mir geht es so weit noch gut
was ich von Dir mein Kind auch
hoffe.
Heute ist nun der 2. Feier-
tag u. wir sind so getrennt, man <- und
weiß nichts was man vor langer
Weile anfangen soll.
Wie schön wär es nur wenn
Frieden wär, u. wir könnten heut <- und
so einsam in Gottesfreier Natur
spazieren gehen.
Das eine Kaß. hab ich nicht <- Kassette
erhalten mit den Zigarren, hoffentlich
kommt es noch an. Heut hab ich von

I have not received the one cassette with the cigars, I hope it still arrives. Today I also received a card from my brother Raul [?], he never writes to me again.

Sorry, instead of Raul, it is more likely “ my brother Paul ” with a poorly drawn P letter.
Just an idea of mine, I´m not so sure about Sütterlin which was introduced in Prussia only in 1915. Might it rather be Deutsche Kurrentschrift?, asks

Yes please, but only if the 'Max' is a Bible Student. Although your comment that 'it is for a non-Watch Tower research project' suggests otherwise.
To the attention of German Girl, thank you so much, you are totally right, it couldn't be the Sütterlin script as my grandmother was born about 1890, I am mixing them up often.

At this point, I do not think he was. I'm still working my way through his letters, but I think not. His last name is Winkler.
