"Eddyism" - never heard Christian Science referred to as that before!

I notice she doesn't try to take on Adventism; neither did Walter Martin, who viewed it as sort of 'an eccentric type of Protestantism' or something like that. As long as they affirmed standard trinitarian doctrine, they were acceptable to him.

Am I the only one who finds this title somewhat confusing? Given the Pentecostal origin of this publication, shouldn't the title have been 'How to counteract Eddyism, Russellism and Mormonism with Practical Christianity'? Using the word 'or' rather than 'with' seems to suggest the need to counteract Practical Christianity itself and infers that Eddyism, Russellism and Mormonism are examples of it.

Yours pedantically,
Gary

Gary,

It's a title format characteristic of the era and the three hundred years prior. Eg: Adventures in the Big Woods, Or Lost and Confused. The portion following "or" is a secondary title, often focusing on some aspect of the work.

Thanks for this context and clarification Bruce. It's a good lesson to learn. Too often I read older writings using modern spectacles and hence my vision is distorted.
