Comments temporarily turned on ...

Have your say: Do you want blog comments restored? If so, why? Comment now ...

Bruce and I have decided to restore the comment function with the exception that you must have a google account to comment. Google accounts are free. This ends anonymous comments. Use your real name or a form of it.

I want visits by the troll employed by the State of Idaho to stop, both to this blog and to my silly personal blog. That person should be aware that I have contacted Idaho State authorities asking for an IP block and an investigation. You, sir, are not welcome here.

Yes, I would like blog comments restored. I really miss seeing the comments from Bernhard, Gary, the two Andrews, Semer, Leonardo, Chris G, Brian, Zions Herald, Miquel, Stephane, and others including our old friend Anon. Seeing those comments, we can react to them, and some good things have come from them in the past.

The problems you have had with rogue comments can be handled by simply taking them down. Not even commenting on them. Deny them the oxygen of publicity and they will go and annoy someone else elsewhere. I don't know what has happened with blogger but for many years the comments came through and were only published if an administrator (generally Rachael) approved them first. So no-one else who read the blog even had to see them.

I totally agree with Jerome

It may just be me but to block comments seems to be the complete opposite of the appeal at the top of the blog: "We'd love to see your feedback".

I also vote for having the comment function back. I think a few comments is better than none, and a lot of great info has come in the past from the comment trails

Dear Anon: We can remove that, and probably should. So you're vote is to continue the block but without the feedback comment?

Let the writer be plain and to the point ... Unless, of course, he is English, in which case he will find doing so a mental and emotional challenge. Say what you mean.

As one of the two Andrews, I am flattered that Jerome even noticed my comments. I can say with all honesty that Jerome's contributions do more for me that mine could do for him. Given that, I hope the comments stay open. The reason? I think the people reading the blog can, even in a small way, contribute to the project by giving their honest appraisal of the excerpts posted here. For example, proofreading and suggestions to phrasing and reasoning can be helpful. I try to contribute in any meaningful way that I can. And it may be that from time to time, these comments could lead to significant contributions. I understand moderating the blog is a lot of work, but it may be worth it if the project is enhanced as a result.

Because of the bad acts by an employee of the State of Idaho, we won't post excerpts of work in progress anytime in the near future. We are working to resolve this problem. We have filed a DMC take down notice with the Wayback people and they responded favorably [given a legal shove]. We are working to end Google cashing. Both of these were misused by the Troll.

But until we are certain the abuse has stopped, no more excerpts of work in progress, at least not lengthy ones.

I do like the feature of being able to comment but can understand, if it becomes some sort of headache to moderate, why it would be limited here and there. I agree w/ Andrew G in an earlier comment here that I too feel honored Jerome would say the kind words above. Being a visitor and infrequent commentor over the last decade or so, I truly am impressed that the site has been kept regularly free from becoming completely off topic or otherwise negative in some way. For this site to continue to refresh with historical insight on subject matter that stimulates ones appreciation for this history is admirable to say the least. Kudos to Rachel, Bruce and Jerome (and possibly others) for working so hard to keep the site relevant and meaningful. Thank you so much for this hard work!

...correction, Rachel should be “Rachael”. Apologies for the mis-spell. (Afterall this site is about keeping things accurate)
